The mountain

The world at our feet, Old Agathon had said. And do you know why?

Because of the mountain, Agathon replied, for he had heard his grandfather’s monologue before.

Because of the mountain, Old Agathon said, as if he had not heard. That’s the secret: the mountain – our home, our eagle’s nest. It has kept us free in an empire of slaves! We know all its secret places, every vale and ridge, every track and path; we can read the mountain – the markings of bears and wolves, of pheasants and rabbits. And it has given us the bird’s eye view. From here we see that the world is big, bigger than the village where we were born, bigger even than the mountain itself and the valley below. The humblest shepherd – but shepherds are not humble! – has seen more of the world than the peasants of the valley, more than the village smithies and grocers, whose greatest undertaking is to travel every couple of weeks to market in Sorovich.

Our ancestors the shepherds traveled up and down the mountains in search of pastures for their flocks. They saw how other people lived – the peasants in the valley – the Bulgarians – how they toiled their lives away, their backs bent, their noses to the ground. To them they looked like ants, working themselves to death in those rich fields – not for themselves but for their Turkish and Albanian masters! From dawn to dusk, they labored. And when the day was done, they were spent. They had no more strength and could see no further than their own misery. So small was their world. And the Vlachs said to themselves, that is no life for us!

They saw the Turks and their Albanian brethren, sitting on their cushions in the coffeehouses smoking their narghilès, content to live off the work of others, those their ancestors had conquered in ancient battles. They rode their horses and lorded it over their Christian subjects, but they showed little initiative to better themselves or their country, and when they needed or wanted more money, they could think of nothing better than to look to the Bulgarians, squeeze them more, rob them, through their system of tithes, of even the little that was left to those poor peasants, not understanding that a man who cannot feed his family has little reason to work to fill another’s granary! And the Vlachs said to themselves, this is not the way to grow prosperous.

They saw the glib talkers in the city who took them for ignorant bumpkins and spoke Greek to impress them, intent on cheating them out of a few paras by overcharging them or tricking them into buying useless trinkets, or needling them for baksheesh. And the Vlachs saw their petty ways and said to themselves that they would not waste their time on such trifles.

We’re not like the others – we’re not slaves and we’re not parasites – we’re the leaven that brings life, renewal. And why? Because we know the world is big – we know because we traveled it…

It’s the mountain, always the mountain. It challenges us. Life isn’t easy here – the mountain is steep and harsh. We had to find a way to live, to survive here. From time immemorial we breathed the pure mountain air. We love our home, our mountain, but we yearn – we need – to see what lies beyond…

People laugh at us at times because we’re slow of speech, slow to act, slow in our movements – even our songs and our dances are slow! But that is our strength! We measure our steps, our gestures, in keeping with our dignity. A Vlach thinks long and hard before he makes a move, but when he does, he knows it is the right one.

We’ve become merchants and craftsmen, created routes for goods and people to travel. We transport them with our caravans. Many of our kind have moved to far-off cities and towns, even beyond the empire, for the sake of business and the good life… The clever Vlach will not toil his life away, he will seek to make his fortune. And in so doing, he will preserve his honor and his freedom. He will do as I did, look after his family and be master of his fate. And he will never forget the mountain that made him who he is.

Muntele
